Cornwall U18 Cup Final - Redruth Colts 12 v Truro Colts 6

Redruth retained the U18 County Cup in a close encounter at Hayle this evening, the result being in doubt right until the final whistle.  On a fine evening with light winds, perfect for rugby, it was Truro who took the lead with a well taken penalty from a technical scrum offence by Redruth.  The Reds hit back almost immediately, when after kicking a penalty to the corner they caught and drove over the line from the resulting line-out to take the lead, Lewis Moyle touching down.  The difficult conversion attempt was just wide.  It was Truro who scored next when the Reds after trying to run out of defence were penalised at the ruck, another well judged kick put Truro into a narrow lead.  Despite heavy Reds pressure and Truro being reduced to 14 men due a yellow card this was how the half finished.

Redruth 5  Truro 6

The second half was dominated by Redruth who took the lead again after about 15 mins with another try this time in the right-hand corner by Shaun Buzza.  An excellent kick by Craig Williams saw the ball sail through the posts to put the Reds 12 – 6 to the good.  Further Redruth pressure should have seen them put the result beyond doubt but very kickable penalties were ignored in favour of tap-and-go moves which came to nothing.  The last few minutes saw Truro pummel the Reds line until a turnover allowed them to clear the danger much to the relief of the coaching staff.  A fully deserved win for the young Reds by 2 tries to 0 sees the cup coming back to Redruth for the 5th. year on the trot.  Man-of-the-match was awarded to Shaun Buzza.

Cornwall U18 Cup - Semi-Final

Redruth U18  32  Penryn U18  15

Despite falling behind in the 1st minute to a converted try the young Reds eventually ran out comfortable winners on misty semi-final day at the Rec.  In the early stages it was the dangerous Penryn back division that looked like they could take their side to victory but gradually the Reds pack took control to deny them quality possession.  The Reds in the end scored 5 tries, 3 of which came from driving mauls which were a major feature of their game on the day.  Penryn ended the game as they started with another try but the Reds had the final say with a successful penalty from the last kick of the game.
The final will be against Truro on Sunday 25th. April.

Redruth Colts National Cup

Redruth U19's Colts moved into the next round of the National cup, with a wn at Torquay RFC on Saturday 19th Septemeber. Whilst several former colts where playing for Redruth 1st XV, this years crop of colts where away to Torquay Colts. Very little was known about our opponents prior to the fixture, although their Devon league results show they are a very good unit, who could put a big score on the board.
Redruth led ably by Adam Lewarne looked to have the best of Torguay in the pack, technical  ability winning the day. Redruth stole alot of lineout ball, with either James Tixeria or Lewarne spoiling on many occassions. Ben Gregor had a great game for the Reds and was the travelling supports man of the match, just getting the vote aheadof no.7 Lewis Moyle, who work rate and power is developing every game. Richard Kevern was also key for the Reds, working well from great ball from the scrum halfs John Jackson and Simon Richards.
Craig William put an early easy penalty miss behind him slottting in the conversion to a Moyle try. Torguay came back at the Reds with an unconverted try, 7-5 was the half time score.
Redruth had contined the dangerous backs from Torquay until, an overlap with Torguays right wing saw the Reds wanting. The Reds hit back from the re-start, with dominent forward play driving them over in the corner. Williams attempt from the touchline just dropping short. 12 all and 2 minutes to go...Torguay charged the Reds line, Moyle again working like a terrier turned over the ball and a great slot kick from Kevern saw the Reds back in the Torquay 20 meter area. Reds won the line out, and Kevern attempted a drop goal. From the 25 meter re-start, the Reds again piled on the pressure. A pentalty for hand in the ruck gave Williams a 30 meter kick which he planted staight in the middle of the posts.
Final whistle Torquay 12 Redruth 15....Redruth face Brixham at home in the next round.

Truro 11 Redruth 50

Redruth Colts romped to an eight try to one victory over a depleted Truro side in the Cornwall under 18 cup. The Reds fielded a strong side with several players available after injury and exploits with Truro college. The young Reds took command from the kick off and never looked in any trouble on a sunny afternoon in benign conditions.

Although Truro gave a game performance they had no answer to the power and pace of the rampant Redruth side, with wing James Williams and Hooker Ben Gregor both grabbing a couple of tries each and other big performances from Adam Lewarne Will Nankervis and Richie Kevern

With Perranporth’s loss at Wadebridge this now means that the Reds are back on track in their bid to retain the Cornwall cup for a fourth year in a row.

The only black spot of the afternoon was another cruel injury to replacement hooker and try scorer Ben Hitchens who has damaged his knee after returning from a serious injury to his other knee that has kept him sidelined for the last three years.

We all wish him a speedy recovery and hope that his injury is not as serious as it seemed on Saturday.

Redruth Scorers: tries - Ben Gregor 2, James Williams 2, Nick Pinniger, Malcolm Hearn, Ben Hitchens, Richie Kevern.Conversions - Richie Kevern 3, Craig Williams 2.

Penzance Colts 7 Redruth 10

Penzance Colts 7 Redruth Colts 10

A fine, dry and much warmer Saturday afternoon, for this local friendly encounter at The Mennaye.

With no league or cup points at stake both clubs used this as a chance to give their squads a run out.

Redruth have had a difficult few weeks losing to both Wadebridge and Perranporth in the under 18s league over the holiday period. However, this outing proves that there is real depth to the quality of the squad with several good performances including hooker Lewis Moyle, Flyhalf Nathan Strick, Back row forward Nathan Evans and wing John Jackson all pushing for places in the major cup competitions that are to come over the next few weeks.

This closely contested match was finally decided by two tries to one with tries from prop Max Irwin and the Reds winning try from John Jackson with 6 minutes remaining.

This weekend Redruth Under 17s take on Camborne in the under 17s Merit table away 2.30 kick off. Meanwhile the Colts warm up for the National Cup next week with a Cornwall Merit table fixture against Launceston at home kick off 2.30

Redruth Colts 47 Truro Colts 7 Jim Trinder reports

A home win in the Cornwall under 18s cup league is rare this season for the Reds colts but this impressive victory keeps them on track for the semi finals to be played in the new year.

The first quarter of the match was very close with Truro perhaps looking the better side with their big pack of forwards taking the game to the Redruth pack.

However as the match progressed Redruth’s superior fitness and organisation told, as the young reds spread the play wide away from the forwards. Truro had no answer to the power and pace of the Redruth back division, with right wing James Williams outstanding, running in four tries and on the left wing Kieron Thomas showing what a promising player he is, giving the Truro backs a really difficult afternoon.

All round this was a very fine performance from the young Redruth side containing several under 17 players scoring eight tries.

Redruth Scorers:

Tries - James Williams 4, Matt Wedlake-Millicam, Ben Noyce, Craig Williams, Richie Kevern.

Conversions: Aaron Penberthy 3

Colts 42 Wiveliscombe 22

After several hectic weeks of cup matches Wiveliscombe were the visitors on Saturday for a friendly fixture.

Our thanks to Illogan Park for the loan of their facilities for this 12.15 kick off.

The early kick off gave everyone a chance to get back to watch the first team fixture against Cambridge.

This was a very open game with lots of ambition shown by both teams.

The young reds, on the back of a good run of form, which has seen them progress in all competitions during November, were good value for their six try haul which gave them revenge for the away fixture defeat earlier in the season.

Redruth Scorers:

Tries: Phil Hinchley 2, Tom Job, Sam Bristow, Ben Jenkins, Mark Jenkin

Conversions: Ashley Hosking

On Saturday the Colts will be in action at home again with fixtures against Truro School 1st and 2nd teams with an 11 o’clock kick off and an Under 18 Cornwall Cup match at the Recreation ground against Truro Colts with a 2.30 kick off.
