A big thank-you to all the players and parents of the Redruth U9's who turned out in force on
Sunday 16th May to take part in our sponsored bike ride from Bissoe to Portreath. We will have raised in excess of £700 once all donations have come in, a fantastic effort from all involved, and of course, all proceeds will go towards new kit for the boys for next season.
A special thank-you to Eric Wilkes, the landlord of the the Basset Arms who generously let us use their on site b-b-q, seen here pictured with Jordan and Matt.

Well done everybody, once again a great effort.

See you all soon.

U9's Take Weston Title

On Sunday 18th April Redruth U9's took a squad of 13 players to Weston-Super-Mare to play in the Weston Hornets Festival. This was to be our first festival of contact rugby and was to be used as a warm up to the County U9's Festival, which will be held on Sunday 25th at St.Austell RFC.

We arrived early and spirits were high, the weather was glorious and the pitches hard and fast, all the right ingredients for us to play our style of rugby.
After the initial coaches meeting and the inevitable questioning from other coaches of ''what sort of season have you had?'' to which I always reply, ''not bad,'' we remained an unknown quantity at the start of the pool games.
It didn't take long for the word to get around that we were playing slightly better than ''not bad'', and it was interesting to see all the other coaches watching us play.

After super play in the four pool games, we had scored 25 tries and not conceded a single one.

Results: Redruth 25 - Hornets 0
             Redruth 25 - Bridgend Athletic 'B' 0
             Redruth 35 - Keynsham 'B' 0
             Redruth 40 - W-S-M 0

We topped the group and were straight into the cup final against Bridgend 'A', and what a final it was. I think it's fair to say that it was the longest 12 minutes of my life! A hard fought first half against a physical and well drilled Bridgend team saw us take a 2-0 lead into half time, thanks to an alround team effort which saw Jordan S pop up to score both tries. The second half was the first time this season where we haven't scored a single try, but like always, our defensive effort was outstanding, repelling wave after wave of attacks. Superb effort!

U16's County 7's Champions

Deservedly the Under 16s Finish on a high!

They marched through the county cup only to loose to Truro in the semis 22-17. Then they came one step short in the shield final, losing to Wadebridge 24-19.

Then they lost the SW final of the Under 17's competition 24-5 to Painswick who are now in the National Final. That is though an awesome achievement by an under 16 team and all should be really proud, as remarked by R.F.U. Divisional Organiser Sanjay Chandavarkar:

Please let them know that they just need to believe in themselves a bit more. The Painswick boys were slightly larger, especially the backs, but you kept some good line out work going and there was some good defending in the 22. I know your boys have speed and with some good feed and quick thinking, they can still beat a Painswick on their day.

Finishing on a high

11 boys have played for Cornwall at either U16's/17's

4 boys have have been offered Academy places so far by Exeter, London Irish and Leicester

We have beaten various touring teams over the season with everyone stepping up to the mark and making squad selection very difficult.

But yesterday in the county 7's cup they were outstanding, on an ideal day for fast rugby. They won their group, beat Penzance in the semi's and then beat Wadebridge 49/5 in the Final to lift the cup!

Well done to everyone there and to the whole squad of 32 who make it all possible

Its all a learning curve for life,
Keep Playing Rugby.
Colts next season...!

Under 14's Win County Cup

Redruth secured a resounding win against a very tough and determined Penryn team in the U14 cup final held at St Austell. Both teams played with passion & pride throughout.

In a closely contested first half, Redruth managed to nudge in front to take a 5 – 0 lead at the interval. In the second half Redruth found their stride and started to play some very exciting running rugby. Their ‘15 man rugby’ style earned them a further five tries to make the final score Redruth 38 Penryn 0.

Well done to all boys from both teams for an excellent display of Cornish Youth Rugby.

Under 13's

Redruth U13's Win County Plate Thriller

Sunday saw the final of the Under 13's Plate Final between Redruth and St Austell at Liskeard RFC. This thrilling encounter saw Redruth come out on top against a spirited St Austell side who never gave up until the final whistle.  Early pressure saw Reds flanker Kieran Westlake score an opportunist try from a quickly taken tap penalty. This prompted a Saints fightback and they capitalised on Reds mistakes to score two well taken tries, one of which was converted. Half time arrived with the score at 12:5 in favour of the Saints.

In the second half Westlake scored his second try following continued Reds pressure.  The score was converted by Josh Beach to leave the scores level at 12 points all.  Turnover ball brought its rewards and the Saints scored again to regain the lead with an unconverted try.  With only minutes to go, the game was one of the ebb and flow and kept both sets of spectators on their toes.  The Saints midfield had plenty of pace and tested the Reds defence whenever they had the ball. For the Reds, centre Jack Williams seemed to be everywhere, whilst No.8 Marco Trethowan was strong going forward. In the end, after a well executed positional kick by Reds prop Harry Burley, it was Westlake who scored his third try to draw the game and Josh Beach who slotted the conversion to secure the Plate for the Reds at 17:19.

Both teams were fully committed to their cause and every player played a key role in this entertaining game.  They were a credit to both their clubs and themselves and if this is was any indication, the future of Cornish rugby is assured.

Redruth Under13's wish to acknowledge their generous sponsors: Incab, Grylls and Paige Solicitors and The Electronic Waste Company.

U14's Tour

Reds u 14 catch up report

Redruth 34 Ivybridge 19.

We welcomed the reigning Devon Champions to the Rec for a return fixture after a great game just before Christmas which resulted in a 14-14 draw. This game had everything that you would expect from a Devon – Cornwall encounter, passion, pride and even some handbags, but more importantly a really good standard of rugby from both teams. Both sets of Coaches were pleased with their performances and we are keen to fixture with Ivybridge again next year.

The Reds got straight into action which has been a feature of several good performances and had raced into a 14-0 lead with tries by Nick and Josh before the Green Army had had a decent touch of the ball.

Soon after good work by their pack resulted in a try for them to prove that this was going to be a close contest. The Reds scored again just before half time and kept their noses ahead throughout the game with Luke having a storming run and finishing off a good move started in their own half.

During the second half the physicality was maintained and our boys did really well to stick to the plot and the result was no more than we deserved.

‘What goes on Tour definitely stays in Bath’ Tour Feb 2010

We took the boys away on their first ever tour with a 3 day trip to Bath where we played Combe Down and Walcott. Once again we were treated to a bit of everything over the weekend, A30 closed due to a serious accident, snow, vomit, great rugby in both games and Tabasco in no particular order!

I would like to thank my ex Red team mate Jamie Knight at Combe Down and school friend Vaughan Edwards at Walcott for their help in arranging the fixtures.

The Tour was a great success with the kids behaving pretty well and even the weather played its part so that when we went to the Bath v Worcester game it was dry.

It was great to have a good number of adults with the team to cheer them on but also to help the general smooth running of the weekend and let me and Adrian sneak out to get a kebab and a pint!

Combe Down 0 Reds 43

We played Combe Down last Easter when they were on tour and their hospitality in return was fantastic.

As the boys were warming up (literally) there was a blizzard but thankfully it stopped quite quickly and the Team were into action from the start, another great start and the Tour was off to a flying start.

Tries were scored by Harry, Dobbers, both Jacks, Will, James and Tommy. Combe Down never gave up and only some great defensive work stopped them from scoring. We stayed at the clubhouse and enjoyed the hospitality until the boys assured us they were ready for bed. About 6 hours later some were still awake playing cards!

On the Saturday we took the boys swimming and then went to watch Bath beat Worcester quite comfortably and had a meal at an Italian Restaurant in the evening. This time they did hit the sack pretty quickly!

Walcott 0 Reds 44

Next morning it was up bright and early and off to Walcott. Both teams started well and it was obvious that they were well drilled and had some very lively backs who made some holes but thankfully our last line of defence was up to the task.

We got our noses ahead after about 10 minutes though a try by Jake and gradually we took control of the game and after a couple of injuries took their toll, we really got going with Luke making another trademark run but where did that chip and chase come from? By half time we had built up a useful lead with 3 tries and managed to keep Walcott out 17 - 0.

All of the boys started one of the games and the whole squad played their part in each game. The replacements came on and Frazer gave away the quickest penalty of all time! Our strength in depth was the biggest feature of this game as the second half performance was as good as the first with Dobbers and Joel both having great games.

The final score was 44-0 which was a harsh reflection on Walcott who are a good side and we hope that they has success in their next game which was a cup semi final. It was great to see Knighty come and support the boys on Sunday and he and Walcott’s coaches Gary and Vaughan were very complimentary about the Team, and to be fair to the boys they deserve all the credit that they are receiving at the moment.

A special thankyou  to Jo Roberts for co-ordinating so much and a really huge thankyou to all individuals and sponsors who donated some money towards the trip.

A great first Tour!

Redruth u14's vs The Pirates

The eagerly awaited Quarter Final between these 2 talented sides went ahead after a 45 minute delay to let the pitch thaw out and it didn't disappoint.
To say that the delay in getting the game on was frustrating is an understatement for both sets of players and the Cup butterflies were fluttering all over the place. Keeping the lads focused for the extra period was a challenge.
The Reds were first out of the blocks, going into a 7 - 0 lead after a try by Josh which was converted by Will.
No quarter was asked or given and there were some really good hits going in from both sides with our Back Row to the fore flattening any thing that moved around the fringes.
The Pirates were equally as physical, and there were some casualties, but all from hard fair play.
Unfortunately, their captain had to leave the field with a nasty cut to his mouth from a stray boot from one of his own team. We hope he has a speedy recovery.

We looked a bit edgy when we moved the ball around the field in the first half and at times we lacked pace and a bit of penetration with our backs running .
The Pirates deservedly equalized just before half time and also had a golden chance to take the lead, and dropped the ball over the line as well.

The mobile Pirates pack started to get among the Reds and some handling errors were capitalised on by the Pirates who had the better of the rest of the First Half, asking some real questions of our lads who haven't experienced that too often this Season.
No need to tell the boys they were in a real battle at half time - even Jack was quiet!

That served as a warning to the Reds and again after the break they started sharper with Josh looking really impressive in the backs immediately making good ground and James and Jake getting through loads of graft up front.
Luke stepped up to the mark and started to win some quality line out possession. The pressure shifted back onto the Pirates and within 5 minutes we had gone ahead again with an unconverted try by Nick to go 12-7 up. Nick had a really good game, making good ground from either using his trusty left peg to clear from defensive positions or showing his pace when he had the ball.
Gradually the Reds started to look more confident and a further solo break by Josh from within our own half ended in a great score which was converted by Will to give us a cushion at 19 - 7. The icing on the cake came when Lee made a break from the 10 yard line, was tackled just inside the 22, got back to his feet and was grunted over the line by the rest of the pack but still emerged with the ball. The conversion was simple and we had the game wrapped up 26-7.

A great effort from the whole squad and as Adrian said before the game it really is a squad effort not just the boys who start or who go on as a replacement. This has been a real feature of this Age Group this year and is undoubtedly one of the main resons behind our success. The boys who came on during this game made a real impact and that is a great sign for the future as the competition for places gets even hotter.
The game was a credit to both sides and we really hope to have another fixture with the Pirates before the season ends.

Redruth U14's vs Launceston

This match was the 1st round of the Under 14's County Knock Out Cup, played the day after the Reds Chiefs had narrowly lost to Launceston AKA Cornish All Blacks in injury time 9-7 in National League One.
In bitterly cold conditions, the boys got stuck in literally from the first whistle with Luke catching the kick off and taking off from his 10 yard line on a solo run through the oppostion ranks and scoring deep in Hellfire Corner, a try after about 15 seconds! That was converted by Will and when Luke caught the next kick off and set off another run we wondered whether he would do it again. To the Launceston boys credit they tackled him early but unfortunately the ball was spun down the line and a second try was scored by Nick to give the Reds a dream start. Two further scores by Nick wrapped up his hat trick in the first half which resulted from some really excellent play by the pack and the backs combining and playing some great team rugby. Other scores were touched down by Will who claimed a family record for meteres gained in 1 break and Josh who outpaced the opposition to score 2 beauties. As Launceston only had 15 players and had an injury requiring a replacement the game was stopped at half time with the Reds leading 51-0 and going through to the next round.
Tommy scored a great try in the second half - his first in the Red shirt - I think, but also had a great run in the first half where he was stopped just short! Simmo had one of those days where the ball just didn't go his way and the other lads were scoring all round him but he kept trying to get involved which is what we've asked for our wide players.
Joel also had a solid game and featured strongly from 15 and all of the squad players who came on in the second half gave it a good show with Barney standing out as he had a great run and was just hauled down before scoring.
Launceston agreed to field one of our players to make up their numbers (thanks Jake!) to complete the game as a friendly and the second half was more even and after some determined play by the All blacks they got a deserved try under the sticks with the Reds ending up overall winnners by 62-7.

Redruth U14's vs Penryn

The Reds took on the County Champions and ran out comfortable winners by 52-10 after playing some great attacking rugby and dominating the game for long periods.
Both teams have struggled to get competetive fixtures this season which meant that this was a good test for both sides. Penryn agreed to the match despite being under strength and we are really grateful for that as we had a full squad available with 25 players which is a great place to be.
The strength of the squad has been a huge factor in the success of the team so far this season and all the lads got some part of the game.
The pre match attitude was great, even Jack was quiet, there were butterflies all round the changing room and Luke knocked me (Stewart) flying in the drill session - he'll pay for that!
The boys went off from the start and attacked towards Hellfire and certainly let Penryn know what getting stuck there feels like! The boys got down to business and scored tries through backs and forwards. Tommy got his first since joining from Camborne and Big Luke who had a great all round game touched down a cracker after several phases. Josh scored a solo effort after turning over Penryn ball, Nick outpaced their defence and Lee touched one down so that by half time the score was 31-0 with Will and Lee knocking over 3 of the conversions.
The second half was played into the wind and could have favoured Penryn's kicking game but they were denied possession for long periods which meant that they were trying to play rugby in deep positions. The Reds kept passing and running into the wind and further tries followed with both Jake and Josh scoring fantastic solo efforts from deep in their own half literally shaking opponents off them as they raced away. The final try was Lee's second to give the Reds a huge lead.
To their credit late in the game Penryn scored 2 tries to bring the Reds feet firmly back to the ground.
The first half of the Season is now over and the boys have shown a great team spirit despite only playing 8 games. After Christmas there will be some real tests as we are playing Ivybridge and Kingsbridge from England have the County Cup matches as well as venturing deep into No Man's Land for a tour to Bath at half term.
Well done to All the Lads so far from Adrian, Andy and Stewart.
