National League One

Farewell from your Webmaster

During my time running this site over the last 8 years, I’ve been pleased how the site has grown; we now have a strong following, over 8,000 visitors in the last month alone and more interestingly, over 94% of you are logging on from outside Cornwall. This highlights that the club has a strong National (88% of visitors) and International (6%) following, our website is key in maintaining contact with our fans who are unable to attend match days at the club.

I’m sure you will all be aware of the financial pressures that clubs like ours are facing whilst we maintain our position in National Rugby. As a result, every aspect of the club is receiving the attention of Gerry our General Manager. Quite rightly, Gerry has identified that our Website could be enhanced to provide additional revenue streams. The changes that the Club now requires outstrips the spare time I have around my day job. Consequently, the time has come for me to take a step back from running our club website. Over the last few weeks Ross Tucknott, your new Webmaster, has been working on a new site that is soon to be released. We will endeavour to minimise any disruption during the change over, but apologies in advance for any outages that may result.

Before I sign off for the last time I want to say a very big thank you to the loyal team of contributors who have supplied and updated content on the site, most notably I want to personally thank, Dave Penberthy, Dave Thomas, James Glasson & Paul Hancock for their efforts over the last few years - without them the site would not be what it is today.

Regards

Mike Caddy

1976-77 Fixture Info Request

We've had someone ask for some details on the 1976-77 season which we're struggling to help with. If anyone could help us to fulfil the following request, please email Nick Serpell at MatchProgramme@RedruthRugby.com so he can pass the information on. Thanks.

I should be grateful if you or your club members can help with a copy of the 1st XV's 1976-77 season fixture list, specifically from a programme or fixture card.  Also, this was the first season for the official Cornwall RFU Merit Table, and I was wondering if you can help with the final standings?

Thank you very much for your time and any assistance you can provide.

Regards

Lee Hurst

Time to start making some noise!

It's been awhile hasn't it!!!!!! … to be honest there has not been too much to talk about over the past couple of months!! I suppose I could of done my usual and waffled on about the great showing of our football team in the World Cup, I could of gone on about England's tour to Australia and I suppose I could of mentioned England beating Australia to win the T20 World Cup … but there was none of that …. I have spent the last 2 months mulling over what happened last year, what I am going to do without Nigel at the helm and what sort of squad I can put together that will be competitive in National 1 next year …

Coming off the back of last season and coming to terms with the many changes that will inevitably happen I have found May and June pretty stressful to say the least! From the outset it has been difficult to talk to players with little or no knowledge of what budget was available. This is not a dig at the club in any way it is just reflective of the way that all clubs are having to cope with the ever diminishing funding and cash injection that is needed to be able to match the aspirations of its supporters and players. I made my views very clear last year that a National set up at this level will be tough to maintain  last season and that view has not changed … I don't want it to be that way but am faced with what I believe to be reality …

So to summaries what has happened …. firstly the Coaching set up and we have decided not to replace the role of Head Coach and go with a structure that see Craig Bonds take on the role of Attack Coach, Tony Cook will assume responsibilities for defense, Terry Pryor will be the front row and scrum coach and Mark Bright will be Forwards Coach concentrating on lineouts and moves. Simon Blake will afford some of his time with the kickers and Nigel Eslick will take on the Team Manager's role in place of Adrian Edwards. Overall responsibility will rest on my shoulders as I become more involved with rugby on and off the pitch. I have been able to do this since the appointment of Gerry Reilly as General Manager as he is taken a lot of the responsibility I had within my role as Chairman of the Exec. I will continue in this role as well as Director of Rugby but with a smaller workload. From my perspective it is good to be totally involved with the rugby side … and I am looking forward to the challenge!

From the playing side we have signed Luke Collins from the Cornish Pirates, Sean Hawkey comes to us from UWIC/Wadebridge Camels (that was the wrong Sean Hawkey in the West Briton last week by the way!!). Sean represented Cornwall during the 2008/2009 campaign that saw them fall at the last hurdle before Twickenham. Ashley Morcom has rejoined from Newquay Hornets and Under 19 players Adam Lewarne and Peter Jenkins take their places in the senior squad. Sam Newman and Grant Thirlby join from  Pretty much all of last year's squad have signed and I am tying up the remaining loose ends as we speak …. Darren Jacques will captain the side with Mark Bright as his Vice Captain.

Pre season games have been organised as follows:-

August 14th - St Ives (H)

August 21st - Taunton (H)

August 24th - St Ives (A)

August 28th - Dings Crusaders (A)

Pre season started last night with 30 players present which is a good start, training will continue through July at Redruth School….I have also spoken with the Cornish Pirates and there will be some "live" sessions in August when they will come to the Recreation Ground for joint training sessions …

Jason Pengilly will take control of the Development structure and hopefully I will be able to announce another person who will be working with Jason in the near future. Our aim is to utilise the Under 19's  team to compete in the CRFU 2nd XV Merit Table, there will obviously be a sprinkling of more seasoned/experienced players helping them out as well ….

I am also hoping that our relationship with Exeter Chiefs will continue and that we are able to secure the services of some Academy players. I have spoken with Robin Cowling and know that my lad, Aaron, will be available as will Malcolm Hearn and a couple of others. I will keep you updated on this front.

On the weekend of July 17th & 18th some of the player's will be representing the Handstand Harlequins at the Newquay Surf 7's competition. The Harlequins have a team entered in each of the competitions and I have had discussions with Launceston about entering joint teams in each of the competitions  …..

So as you can see there has been lots going on and there is still lots to do ….

Finally, there is the Players Reunion on Friday 27th August and I am really keen to get as many former and current players there as possible …. please make a note and come along for a few beers and a chat …

Cheers for now

Luke Collins' England Counties Guest Blog Pt 2

This post was written by Luke Collins, who was passing the time before donning the Red shirt again next season by touring Canada with the England Counties squad.

Hello and welcome back to my guest blog!

We arrived back at Heathrow at 10am on Monday the 14th of June. It was a long yet very enjoyable two weeks, with some excellent rugby with a dash of socialising mixed in!

I left it last time that we had just landed in Toronto and we were getting ready for our game against Ontario Blues again this was a provincial side and we were soon told they would be a much harder test for the England Counties side. We prepared well and all of the players were more than up for the challenge of beating this opposition and keeping the tour on a winning run.

We arrived in Toronto on the Saturday lunchtime and our game was on the Tuesday night. It was important that we had the combination of training and rest right so the players could give 100% against our toughest opposition on tour to date. And with forwards coach Dave Baldwin and backs coach Jan Bonney we were sure as players we would be in the best shape possible. With a great session on the Sunday and a near perfect team run on the Monday the players were ready to get into a battle!

Before we had our game on Tuesday we had been asked to help coach the local youth and women's teams. This was a tour tradition and helped us promote the name of England Counties and also help bring on younger players with some new coaching ideas. We were told as a group we would initially have 60-70 children and women to coach, however as we pulled up it was easy to spot this figure was a little sparse! With the actual number coming close to 160 we had to adapt our pre planned sessions pretty quickly!

The coaching session lasted for approximately an hour and all of the females and children alike thoroughly enjoyed the session and gained some valuable experience, as well as giving the coaches so new ideas. The game against Ontario Blues was to be held at the Crusaders ground and this is where we helped with the coaching of the youth and female set ups. I have to say that the club there is well run with a great family atmosphere and with some fantastic ideas and wanting to develop the youth and draw them into their senior side........ Sounds very much like Redruth RFC!

Before we went on with any coaching we had a little down time and decided to go and visit a local sight.............. Niagara Falls! This was an epic sight and was a fantastic opportunity to visit one of the worlds most famous land marks! With a voyage with the Maiden of the mist its a trip I will not forget any time soon. However some of the travelling party felt a little hard done by with just a trip on a boat so decided to catch a helicopter and view the falls this way. I was assured it was a once in a lifetime chance and shouldn't be missed (I had opted to miss, $100 was to steep for me!)......... However one of the helicopter passengers may as well have stayed at home as apparently he was a little nervous of heights and spent half of the trip not looking out of the window but more at the inside of their eyelids! I suppose it would be a bit like knowing you can't swim and jumping into the deep end of the pool!

Anyway back to the game against Ontario Blues....
This game again was an evening kick off: this always poses a little bit of a problem as after the captain's run in the morning as it leaves the players bored in the hotel. However with the hotel having a very good indoor pool and hot tub I don't think it was going to be much of a problem on the boredom front. Especially with the indoor water slide!

The game against Ontario was definitely a game to be watched with expansive flowing rugby throughout. With a score in the first five minutes and a penalty not long after the players decided to almost try a sevens approach to the game. With Ontario capitalising on this scored a great catch and drive to score through their front five and not long after scoring a penalty, in fact the poor discipline of the England players in their own half kept Ontario in the game as their kicker was on top form! Going in to the break 16-10 down it was not an ideal situation, with some stern words from the coaches and some realisation by the players that the opposition were not just going to lie down and throw the game away. The Counties side came out playing some great rugby and putting the first score on the sheet that half. The game was still expansive in the late stages with again the counties side trying to play too much rugby in the dying minutes instead of retaining possession and locking the game out! With the final whistle gone and a win secured the players breathed a sigh of relief as this could have been the banana skin of the tour. Thankfully we came away with a win of 26-32.

With the players leaving Toronto the next day for a long 5 ½ hour flight the next day it was time to concentrate heavily on the post match recovery, with the team doctor ensuring all the players got into the ice bath and weighing in as well as rehydrating with fluids............. After the post match meal it was time to go back to the hotel for an early night and a bottle of water ready for the flight the next day.................... via a bar or two!

Next stop was Vancouver and our opposition were the BC Bears. We had been told that this would be our hardest test to date and could be the game that ruins our tour! With the players feeling a little tired and sore they still threw themselves at this new challenge! Again with such a short turn around the players had to ensure the preparation was second to none.

As we arrived in our new accommodation it was clear the the opposition, who had arranged it had wanted to upset us from the outset. With it looking like the Brazilian favelas (think 'City of God'!) we settled in as best we could. With a pool recovery session booked we all drew straws on who was to remove the body from the pool if such a problem occurred........ I am glad to say this was not needed and the pool was clear from debris!

Again we prepared well and the game against BC was fast approaching! We had a little down time and decided to do a little more sightseeing. Whistler was our destination of choice, this was the host to the 2010 winter Olympics! The village was a great sight but only seconded by the view from the top of the mountain! It was safe to say it was cold and wet up there! Almost the same as the top of Carn Brea! However we did get to see a grisly bear! A bit like Nigel H after a bad loss...... just without the bad language!

The game against BC Bears had arrived and with the game being played at a much more sociable time of 15.00 it meant that match day preparation returned to what most players had been undertaking for most of the season.

With the game under way it would appear that our first concerns that this side would be the toughest was unfounded at best! With some excellent free running tries being run in from any area of the field. With the half time team talk coming through to the players that we are our own worst enemy and should be win by a cricket score.................. Sometimes this can be the kiss of death for some teams and you can easily go on to loose a game. However this was not the case and we managed to put over 40 points to the opposition. It was a great game played with some great spirit from both sides!

Approximately 12,000 miles were covered and with around 21 hours worth of flying you can see how 3 games in 14 days was a tall order for the players to keep going and to keep motivated. But with the players staying ever professional throughout it made for a very successful tour with 3 wins from 3 games!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Danny Hodgson who ends his 9 year relationship with the England Counties: he has been involved with the side since it was founded in 2001 and has been the cornerstone to every game and tour alike. I would like to wish him the very best and hope he enjoys his time with the RFU in what ever role he fulfils next. There is one thing I am sure of, and that is he will do it with pride and passion for the English rose and English rugby.

Thanks for reading my blog and will see you soon when I hopefully pull on the red shirt once again in the pre season friendlies then into a tough league season! (PS: You should follow me on Twitter here!)

Luke Collins' England Counties Guest Blog

This post was written by Luke Collins, who is passing the time before donning the Red shirt again next season by touring Canada with the England Counties squad. You should follow what he's up to in the run up to their final game at http://twitter.com/rugby_luke.

Luke Collins in his England Counties training kitHi and welcome to a blog about the England counties tour to Canada!

Firstly let me introduce England Counties and why they were founded in 2001/2002. It was decided in the RFU think-tank that there should be an international representative side below that of the Premiership, to promote the game to more rural areas of the world and spread the word of English rugby and help develop their players with top class opposition. So here was the foundation for the England Counties set up! There are normally two tours per season comprising of a winter and summer tour, rhe winter tour being closer to home with international fixtures against Ireland and France. The other tour travels further afield: previous tours have been to Russia, America, Canada and Tokyo and Japan.  The players are selected from the Championship and National Division One. The opportunity for a player at that level to represent his Country is seconded to none. The players are picked from all over the country and all players are watched with a careful eye from the team of selectors that work tirelessly during the season. This year is no exception and players have been picked far and wide (20 clubs) and from all of the top rugby counties in England. It gives the players something to work for during the season, and as a player that has been here pulling on the white shirt that bears the English rose that is recognised worldwide is a feeling of immense pride and passion. For players not in a full time professional club it gives them the opportunity to sample life as a full time professional player.

As players we were all informed of our selection 7 days prior to departure. The trip was broken down into 3 games in three different venues around Canada. We started at Newfoundland St Johns to play against The Rock,  moving onto Toronto to Play against Oakville Crusaders and finishing up in Vancouver to play against BC Bears.

We all met up on Sunday the 30th May at a hotel next to Heathrow airport, on arrival we were issued with our kit for the tour, and instructions for the next day when we would fly to Newfoundland! The flight was approx 3 ½ hours, so not too bad! Our days will comprise of training twice a day and after flights  a pool recovery session and a captains' run the day before a game. So as you can see we are being worked very hard indeed!!

However, the dress codes we were issued were not to all of the travelling party's high standards. It's no surprise that a former back and now backs coach (no names) didn't like the thought of black shoes with chinos so took it upon himself to stray from the code quoting “Black shoes and chinos simply just don't go, it doesn't make any fashion sense” I am sure this budding Gok Wan will air more fashion tips to the players throughout the tour.

When we arrived in Newfoundland it was a little bit of a shock to the system, as I was fresh from the beaches of Cornwall I suddenly found myself in a different country with driving rain and the temperature at 3 degrees!! However the boys from the north part of the country were thinking they were home !! Then with the call coming from the coaches that we should have a recovery walk to get rid of the journey I started to wonder what I had let myself in for!!

After 2 days of getting to know each other and putting together a game plan and getting the players used to it, there was a little bit of down time for the players to venture into town to have a look around and see what the town (Newfoundland) had to offer. I can only compare it to Camborne on a wet day, I will let you draw your own conclusions to this. The weather finally settled for 48hrs  with some players forgetting that they may need to use sun cream on their receding hair lines........

Unfortunately the good weather did not stay and come Friday night the wind and rain was in top form! Making for a freezing cold game, and with the ball being wet and greasy it was very much a stop start fixture. We came away from the ground 6-20 Winners, some excellent play in horrid conditions provided the majority of the points and some excellent kicking from fly half Ross Winney adding the extras.

We are now happily based in Toronto where its 25 degrees and sunny!! Over the 4 day stop over here we will be putting the final touches and improvements necessary to come away with a 2nd victory against Ontario Blues!!

One thing that I have noticed from my week with the England Counties (and the 2 weeks prior in 2009) is how professional the set up is. The team manager Danny Hodgson who works tirelessly with the help of Michael Olds and Pam Cartwright in putting together the logistics necessary to take 26 players to a different country. As players we want for nothing as there is always water and Powerade to aid recovery and a well planned diet plan given to the hotels by the management to ensure we are on top form. Also we have a full medical team travelling with us to ensure that all of the players are as fit as possible to take the field! This comprises of Doctor Andy Smith and physio Sally Tawhai. However with the set up being so professional there is a requirement for the players to use an ice bath after all training sessions and games: just when I thought I had escaped them for good as well!!

Well thats it for this week, I will try and put together a blog before my return to the UK. .

Footnote: England Counties won their match against Ontario Blues last night 26-32. Luke is one of only four players to have started both games!
